Clients come to us asking for a promo video. Sometimes that’s exactly what they need. More often, they need something different — and understanding the distinction saves time, money, and a lot of frustration.
Here’s the difference between a promo video and a brand film, and how to know which one is right for your company.
What a promo video is
A promo video is a short, direct piece of content designed to drive a specific action. Watch this service explainer. Register for this event. Buy this product. It’s promotional by nature — it exists to move someone from awareness to action as quickly as possible.
Promo videos are typically short — 60 to 90 seconds. They’re structured around a clear call to action. They prioritize clarity and directness over depth or emotion. They’re the right tool when you have a specific offer and a warm audience that’s ready to act.
What a brand film is
A brand film is a longer, story-driven piece that builds the emotional foundation your promo videos need to work. It doesn’t sell. It earns trust.
A brand film might be three to eight minutes long. It follows real people. It reveals the story behind the company — why it exists, who built it, what it stands for. It doesn’t ask for anything. It gives the viewer something: a reason to believe in the company behind the product.
Brand films work because trust is the real barrier to purchase in most industries. Lowering the price doesn’t build trust. A film that shows who you are does.
The relationship between them
Think of it this way: a brand film is the foundation and a promo video is the campaign built on top of it.
Without the foundation, promo videos are competing on price and features — a race most companies can’t win. With the foundation, the promo video is backed by trust the viewer has already built with your brand. The sale becomes easier because the relationship came first.
The best marketing ecosystems have both. A brand film that lives on the homepage and in the sales process, and promo videos that drive specific campaigns and conversions.
Which one does your company need right now?
If you’re an established company with strong brand awareness and a specific campaign to run — a product launch, an event, a seasonal promotion — a promo video is probably the right starting point.
If you’re a company that’s been in business for a while but still finds itself explaining who you are and why you’re different in every sales conversation — you need a brand film. You’re missing the foundation.
If you’re not sure which one you need, that’s what the first conversation is for.
